Detoxification: pillar #2 in Bay Wellness Centre’s health strategy

Category: Blog

Have you heard today’s biggest buzzword? It is detox and the detoxification process.

Hi, I’m Dr Annie Savage. I’m one of the naturopathic doctors at the Bay Wellness Centre located in downtown Vancouver.  In our office we primarily see women for women’s health issues. They include helping to balance hormones, achieve weight loss and stress management. Today, we are discussing what true detoxification is. In our health series so far we have been discussing the four pillars of health. In our last video and blog we discussed nutrition and how everything that we put into our body becomes our body. So nutrition is super important.

In today’s blog, as our second pillar of health we discuss detoxification. We are talking about true detoxification and not those gimmicks or fads you hear about or any of those detox teas that you’ve been seeing on Instagram. So stay tuned.

Detoxification is the natural process of cleansing in our body that primarily involves the liver. But did you know that your liver is in charge of a lot more than just detoxifying alcohol and drugs and medication? Your liver is actually helping your body with its blood glucose or blood sugar levels and your hormone balance. So this detox process is very important. As well, we have other organs of elimination that we want to focus on. We want to support all of our organs of elimination to achieve true detoxification. There’s a name for your organs of elimination and that is: emunctories.

There are five organs involved in detoxification

The liver is the first, which we all know and then we have our colon, our kidneys, our lungs and our skin. Our skin is actually our largest organ and it’s a huge organ of elimination.

When we’re focusing on detoxification and supporting those organs of elimination, we first want to remove as much as we can of the bad things or toxins that we’re putting – onto our body – into our body and – around our body. So that’s the first place we look to begin our detoxification plan.

We want to look at our environment. How can we change that? How can we change the air that we’re breathing or the water that we’re drinking? Can we change it at all? First and foremost, as women, we can change things that we’re putting on our body. Unfortunately, women often put a lot of toxic chemicals on our body in the course of any day. Think of all the hair care products you use, skincare and makeup. Many of those products have toxic chemicals in them that actually disrupt our hormones. So that’s the first place we look and try to change out those products for cleaner versions.

Other products in our home that we can change are cleaning products. Think of your kitchen and your bathroom, primarily. What products are you using to clean those areas? Did you know that as you use them, you are actually absorbing and inhaling those products? So we want to switch those products out as well for cleaner versions. Each action helps to reduce our toxic load.

By reducing our toxic load and supporting our organs of elimination, we can change our health for the better. So that’s what we aim for and so it is nearly always our first step when we’re working with patients. We have found we get the best results for our patients and help the new habits stick with Bay Wellness Centre’s “Signature 21 Day Cleanse”.

How do you know if you need a detoxification cleanse or detox support program?

Let’s talk about some symptoms that indicate you would benefit from detox support:

  • Unexplained fatigue or feeling tired all the time is not normal. That is telling us that there’s something wrong.
  • Digestive issues are also symptoms that you shouldn’t need to deal with on a daily basis. Again, they can be telling us that we need to look at your gut health and your detoxification pathways. So if you’re experiencing chronic diarrhea or constipation or alternating between those two, then it’s time to look inside.
  • Skin rashes such as eczema psoriasis, skin irritation and acne can be big cues.
  • Headaches, brain fog, difficulty with your memory are also issues that we can look at.

So those are just some of the reasons that indicate that we would want to do this supportive program with you.

To get started today on improving your health right now from where you are, you could begin to remove these things from your diet:

  • Reduce and eliminate alcohol
  • Reduce and eliminate caffeine or coffee
  • Reduce and eliminate refined sugars and refined carbs

All of those products only add to the toxic burden and inflammation of your system. In fact, you’ll find that when you can reduce inflammation in your system and support those detoxification pathways, your health just skyrockets. If you think that you need support with your detoxification and your digestion, let us know. You’ll get customized guidance to help clear your body of toxins, let it heal
